Topic 2: Introduction to CALL. What is that?

Hey, it's me again Yana. Heheh. For today's blog entry, i will be going to share with you guys about the introduction of  Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) that i have learned last week on 31st May 2017, Wednesday. Warning!! Just don't get boring okayyy. Set that in your mind. The stuff that i am going to share is so informative for you guys to expand your knowledge more about the evolution of technology we are gratefully having it right now. Therefore, thank me later...

For the introduction of the class, Madam Azida showed us some pictures of students' learning environment by using the technologies such as calculator, ipad and cellphone. She asked us to try to guess what were those pictures represented about. Non of us can guess the answer and at last she told us that it was related to the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).

Based from my understanding, the term CALL refers to the area of technology and second language teaching and learning. It is the search for and study of the application of computer in language teaching and learning.

I identified that they were four kind of programs in CALL. The first program named as (1)CALL-Specific Software and its function was designed specifically to facilitate language learning such as games for kids to learn in enjoyable method by using the computer.

Figure 1: Example of CALL-Specific Software.

The second program named (2)Generic Software and its refers to application designed for general purpose but co-opted for language teaching and learning. For example, MS Word Processor and Powerpoint.

The third program named as (3)Web-Based Learning Software. It is application and stuff found on the internet co-opted for use as tools for language teaching and learning. Familiar example that we know such as encyclopaedias, magazine and news website, blogs, wiki etc.

The fourth and the last but not least of programs in CALL named as Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). It is the applications or websites designed to facilitate online communication. It can be divided into two groups that are named as Synchronous – Instant Messaging, online chat and Asynchronous – Email, discussion forum and message board.

That's all for today's blog entry. Thank you & come again for another knowledge sharing.
