Topic 3: The Evolution of CALL

Hi readers, the reason i am blogging for today because of the feeling of wanted to share with you guys about the evolution of CALL. Let me tell you what i have learned about the changes and transformation occur in the topic, CALL.

First of all, i got to know about the progression of CALL. There are 3 types of progression of CALL which are;

  1.  behaviouristic CALL
  2.  communicative CALL
  3.  intergrated CALL
Let's start with what is the meaning of behaviouristic CALL? It has been developed in 1960's based from behaviourist learning theory. It is primary used for  Audio-Lingual method. The Programmed Instruction involves repetitive drill and practice. In the same time, this type of progression of CALL, behaviouristic CALL, also can be labelled as the ultimate teacher's assistant. This is because it is a tireless drillmaster with a perfect pronunciation model. Behaviouristic CALL was simply can be understood that it is a program to make the students learn into computer-based application. There's no need to bring the heavy textbooks to school or there's no more excuses of missing the worksheet.

On the other hand, i have also learned about the stanford project (1960). It is basically like the students who sit for computer-based examination such as listening or speaking test.

Eventhough this kind of technology might seem good, it still have the pros and cons for it. I think i dont need to explain one by one the advantages and the disadvantages. You guys can figure it out.

Next, i learned about communicative CALL. The development of communicative CALL occur between the year 1970s and 1980s. It focused more on the usage of the language itself rather than grammar. It teaches grammar implicity rather than explicity. In the simpler word, it does teach grammar but it doesn't teach grammar as a whole. It allows students to generate their own original utterance. This communicative CALL were act as a tutor for the students as it is non-drill format skill practice. It also has language games, text reconstruction, paced reading, pronunciation practice.

On the other hand, let me share with you guys about the last type of progression of CALL which is the integrated CALL. It is basically the integration of real-world materials into CALL. It began with the use of CD-ROMs to store large amounts of authentic media that can be used as materials.

Last but not least, you must be wondering what is the relation between the Internet and CALL right? It is related because recent advances in CALL is dominated by the internet to access and communicate information.

There you go, a lil bit of my sharing session with you readers. Thank you for your time. Have a nice day ahead.
